German Elections: Concerning Decline in Women’s Electoral Participation

Women making up less than a third of the total candidates causes concerns about the current status of gender equality in political participation, where 1,422 of the 4,506 candidates were women, accounting for only 31.6% of the total contestants. This marks a decrease from the 2021 elections, where 2,024 out of 6,211 candidates were women, representing 32.6% of the total. The high disparity in numbers further shows that the fight to have more women in decision-making and governance positions must continue.
