This International Day of Persons with Disabilities, we demand genuine leadership and representation of women with disabilities on all decision-making levels. This year's theme is "Amplifying the leadership of persons with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future". Governments and the international community must ensure that women with disabilities have the same opportunities for life with dignity as anyone else.
Women with disabilities, in particular, face multiple obstacles every day. They struggle with limited access to education, lower literacy rates, and fewer opportunities in the workforce. Even when employed, they often earn less than their male colleagues with disabilities. They are also disproportionately vulnerable to physical and sexual violence- whether at home, in institutions, or within their communities. This violence includes deeply inhumane acts such as forced sterilization or denial of reproductive rights.
Their voices remain underrepresented where it matters most. Women with disabilities hold only 2.3% of decision-making roles, and only 12% of employees in national disability coordination mechanisms are women, compared to 21% who are men. These gaps reflect the urgent need for action.
Let us use this day to advocate for a world where women with disabilities can thrive and lead. Governments and international institutions must ensure equal access to education, healthcare, and safety from violence for all women with disabilities. Policies must guarantee their leadership roles and decision-making mechanisms that impact their lives.
Together, we can create an inclusive, just, and sustainable future where the leadership of women with disabilities is celebrated and their rights are respected.
