As an organisation that supports women worldwide in claiming their role as ‘agents of change’, Gender Concerns International is avid in its commitment in helping to provide Tunisian women with the opportunity to participate in the political structures that will shape future economic and social reforms. Therefore, Gender Concerns International has focused on observing Tunisian elections, in order to ensure women’s political influence. Since the beginning of the wave of transformation in Tunisia and the wider region, the organisation has been extremely active in entreating Dutch and other European governments and parliaments to acknowledge the role women play in the pro-democracy movement. With the advent of democracy in Tunisia with the elections in 2011 and 2014, Gender Concerns recognises the vital importance of mainstreaming a gendered perspective into the electoral process. This is not only beneficial to civil society organisations, but is also a vital component of capacity building in state institutions.
