Director Sabra Bano, former Head of Gender Election Observation Mission (GEOM), Libyan General Election 2012 and the Elections of Constitutional Drafting Committee 2014, expressed her concern over yesterday`s horrific attack at HNEC calling it an attempt to derail the process of organizing the electoral system in Libya.
Ms. Bano, further added that Gender Concerns International condemns the attack on the High National Electoral Commission (HNEC) in Tripoli and expresses its solidarity with the people of the country. In a message to Dr. Emad Alsaiah, the Chairman of HNEC, Ms Bano wrote “very sorry to hear about today`s cowardly attack at HNEC and the loss of so many valuable lives. I wish you and HNEC much strength and support”
Gender Concerns International learned of the terrorist attack with much shock and sadness, and reaffirms its support in contributing to peace and democracy in the country. We offer our condolences to the victims and their families and wish a prompt recovery for those injured in the attack.
The upcoming elections in Libya will be of utmost importance in creating a stable and representative government for its citizens. As a member of international community, Gender Concerns International reiterates its strong support towards the HNEC that as an institution has shown its long commitment in strengthening the democratic process in the country and needs further support from the international community to stabilize peace and reconciliation efforts.
